# Is Spalling Concrete Dangerous?

 Short answer: It can become dangerous. Early spalling, hairline cracks with rust stains, is a maintenance issue. Spalling that bulges, sounds hollow or has loose pieces can fall, which is why HDB warns that neglected spalling can spread and become a safety hazard. Keep clear of loose sections over beds, sinks and walkways and get them inspected.

## What to do today if it is loose

- Keep people out from under the area, especially over a bed, sink or doorway.

- Do not pull at hanging pieces from directly below.

- Photograph it with the date.

- Get an inspection: the specialist sounds the area to find how far the hollow section extends.
