# What Is a Ponding Test, and Why Does It Matter?

Updated 2026-10-10 · by Seepwise

Short answer: A ponding test proves a new waterproofing membrane holds before it is buried. The floor traps are blocked and the waterproofed floor is flooded with water for a minimum of 24 hours, while the ceiling below is checked for damp. If nothing comes through, tiling goes ahead. If it leaks, the membrane is fixed while it is still exposed.
[Seepwise](/) writes these guides from HDB, MND and BCA sources and published Singapore price data; each claim links to where it comes from.

## How it works

- The new membrane cures.

- Floor traps and the door threshold are blocked.

- The floor is flooded to a set depth.

- The water is left for at least 24 hours (guide); some contractors quote 48 hours in their packages (Triton).

- The ceiling below and the walls beside are checked for damp.

- Pass: drain, screed if not already done, tile. Fail: fix the membrane while it is still exposed.

## Why it matters more than anything else in the job

Every other step of waterproofing is hidden by the end: the membrane sits under screed and tiles. The ponding test is the one moment anyone can see whether the work holds. Skip it, and the first proof comes from the neighbour downstairs.

## What to ask your contractor

- Is a ponding test in the quote, and for how long?

- Who checks the unit below, and when?

- Will you photograph the flooded floor and the dry ceiling?

## Bottom line

No ponding test, no proof. Make it a line item. [Request a quote](/contact/#request) and ask for it by name.

How long should a ponding test last? +
Guides describe a minimum of 24 hours; some contractors quote 48. Can I skip it to save time? +
You can, but it is the only proof the membrane holds before tiles make it inaccessible. Who checks the ceiling below? +
The contractor should arrange a check of the unit below, or the ceiling of your own lower floor in a landed home. [Related serviceToilet waterproofingA wet area that stays dry for years needs three things done in order: membrane, screed, test.](/toilet-waterproofing/)
